We all know dentists recommend flossing every day to reduce the dental decay caused by plaque between teeth, I’ll be honest, this is one of my worst problems with dental care. I hate to floss, maybe I’m lazy but truthfully, I think it’s because I don’t like to deal with the floss itself! It’s gross, let’s be honest here, can we?

The plaque gets on the floss, then you wind it around your fingers, most likely getting in on your hands, and if you’re like me, my gums bleed a little bit when I floss… I’m sorry but it’s just YUCKY. There I said it… I feel better now. I was super happy to find a product that takes the yuckiness out of flossing, and it’s actually easier to do, and it’s a “green” product to use as well. I’m not really one of those “love the mother earth” type people, but if a product is green, then that’s like an added bonus to me. I’m talking about the Bryton pick. This is a revolutionary new way to clean the space in between your teeth without having to use traditional dental floss… ME LIKEY!!

The slim, metal pick fits easily into a purse, and you can re-use it for a few weeks. It’s highly recommended by dentists and you can find it at most drug stores, and places like Target or Walmart in the dental section. What I really liked about it is the little rubbery place to hold onto (no yucky dental floss winding around my fingers) and the fact that it slips in between teeth so well, unlike dental floss that you have to pry in between the teeth… also, my gums NEVER bled once while using the Bryton pick. Isn’t that awesome!? You should totally check it out, Goose gives it a BIG GIANT thumbs up. :)

I admit it… this suburban middle-class Chicago girl has become a

Jersey Shore Whore!!
I’m totally addicted to this stupid reality TV show!

I think one of the hooks is because their lives ARE so completely different than mine, I feel like a voyeur peeping in on a train wreck! I can’t stop watching it! It’s like a bad car accident that you drive by and you can’t HELP but looking at it, although you know it’s going to be grisly and sooo yucky to look at! I can’t wait until each week’s installment~ I HAVE to know what is going to happen! I need to know who Mike “The Situation” is going to hook up (grenade or non-grenade) , who J-Woww is going to crack in the mouth this week (I LOOOVE that girl ), and how drunk and stupid the big and funny, (but kinda hot in a Mrs. Robinson way) Ronnie is going to get each week!  However, I must be honest,  The BIG draw for me is Snooki though, “Nicole” to her close friends, “Snooks” to the juiceheads she lusts after… Seriously, the girl’s hair is taller than the Empire State building, and those goofy slippers she pads around in crack me up! That girl can do some amazing back flips for being a shrimpo just like me! (Yep, I’m 5′ 2″!).

Recently on the episode that kicked off season 2 of “The Shore” Snooki mentioned that she was no longer patronizing tanning salons and opting for an at-home tanning spray system instead~ why, you may ask? According to Snooks, “because Obama put a 10% tax on tanning,” she said. “And I feel like he did that intentionally for us.” She also commented, “McCain would never put a 10% tax on tanning because he’s pale and he’d probably want to be tan,” she said.

Hear! Hear! for tightening your belt in these tough economic times, Snookers, this mom is PROUD of you, girlfriend! However, just as I am concerned about my kids carrying backpacks that are too heavy, I am just as concerned about you lugging all that bulky & heavy bronzer around with you too sweetheart! I don’t want you to throw your back out and not be able to finish the season!

I thinkGoosie may just have a VERY good and economical solution for your spray tanning.  Stay tuned Snooki, I’ll keep you posted on the most awesome airbrush cosmetic and spray tanning system to hit the market these days. Check back in a week or so, and I’ll fill you in.

Until then

GTL baby!

(Side Note: I am very curious to know exactly how many people actually LIVE in Vinny’s house? uncles, aunts, parents, nieces, sisters… sheesh it’s like the whole cast of the Sopranos live in that little brick house!… just sayin)

My garbage day is on Friday…on Saturday, I realized my deep freeze in my garage had gone out :(
(insert gasps from the crowd here)…anyone that knows me, knows I am a bargain shopper and I often get AMAZING deals on food, I have a large family to feed and it seems there is always “extra” people around that need to be fed too…thus, my freezer was packed to the gills with frozen turkeys, chickens, pork chops, roasts, and about a bazillion other things. In the heat of Chicago, a million pounds of rotting, defrosted meat does NOT SMELL GOOD! We cleaned out the freezer with bleach and bagged up all the garbage, it was a sad day indeed. My mom stays here and the other night, she was outside sitting in a lawn chair in the driveway having a moment to herself, and in the dark of the night, she saw two animal eyes glowing at her! She jumped up from her chair and ran inside! She came in, out of breath and said “I think there’s a coyote in the driveway, I think it smells the garbage!”… a coyote??!! In the burbs?? Well, it wouldn’t be unheard of, I pressed her for details…”what did it look like?” … “Black as the night! Eyes glowing and BIG”…I said, “maybe it was a raccoon mom, or a possum?” and she shook her head adamantly…”NO! I KNOW what I saw Heather Lynne!” (that’s what she calls me when she’s annoyed with me! LOL) …
Three more days went by…the summer heat continued to flare and cause the garbage to create the MOST AWFUL stench…I wouldn’t have been surprised if the smell would have attracted a bear or a lion at that point! It was HORRIBLE!
The next day was FINALLY garbage day…we hauled the putrid cans of garbage out to the street, gagging all the way…on Friday morning, Mom was outside again and came running in the house, “It’s back!!”…I looked at her in dismay, “What is back, mom?”…”that animal! it’s a dog! It’s trying to get into the garbage on the street!”…I went out the side door and fired up the garden hose…I didn’t know WHAT to expect…I was anticipating a grizzly bear sized devil dog, bristling hair, gnashing teeth, foaming mouth…
I came up the driveway with hose in hand, in full assault formation…and there he stood…the devil dog…
it was a chihuahua…
NO LIE!
I yelled once and he split running down the street, with his little tail curled between his legs, running scared!
So much for the Jersey devil in my driveway…

There’s always something fun happening around here.

Senator’s Son: An Iraq War Novel

I go through little spurts where I dig on one musical artist for a period of time and totally try to absorb their essence through their music. I’ve been on a Mahalia Jackson kick lately. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the “Queen of Gospel Music” you are MISSING OUT!! This woman is truly an inspiration to me as a singer with her powerful contralto voice~and her deep faith alone is inspiring. When she grooves on that “hallelujah” in “Go Tell It On the Mountain” it’s amazing!! Many of her gospel songs have their roots in “Negro spirituals” that encouraged slaves to find their hope in Jesus~and to embrace the ideology that they were not carrying their burdens alone. This deep spiritual feeling can be felt in Mahalia’s songs from beginning to end.

Mahalia Jackson was born in the 20’s in New Orleans and died in Evergreen Park, Illinois in the 60’s. She has strong ties to both places, both the Big Easy as well as ChiTown. (Which happens to be where Goosie hails from also!).

I’ve been soaking up Ms. Mahalia’s gospel tracks of late on my ipod and I must say she is one INSPIRING chick! Not only did she record over 30 albums during her career but they mostly focused on her deep Christian faith. Her father was a baptist minister and it’s understandable where her musical tendencies sprouted from. At the ripe age of 16, Mahalia moved from the south to Chicago during what was then called the “Great migration”~a time of movement from many southern blacks to the north. In the late 20’s she met up with Thomas A. Dorsey, a very prominent gospel singer of the day~they toured together for a decade in half until the spotlight shone exclusively on the southern singer turned Chitown gal. In the 1950’s she was the very FIRST Gospel singer to sing Carnegie Hall in New York (You go girl!). What an accomplishment, for a poor black girl growing up in New Orleans sharing her home with many siblings and surviving on the income of a poor black baptist minister. She is truly an inspiration to me~and it shows me that you CAN overcome ANY obstacles if you take the God given talent you’ve been given and apply it! I remember as a child I’d often see on my report cards in the teacher comments section, “Heather needs to apply herself more”…not anymore teach, just watch me go, I’ve got that mahalia fire in my belly and I’m overcoming obstacles, using the gifts God has given me and I’m loving every minute of it. Someday, I will arrive~as a woman in business, as a girl from a “broken” home, as an artist trying to find her market and her niche, as a mom raising three children, struggling to make ends meet…someday…and until then, I will have Miss Mahalia as my inspiration!

Goosie Girl Suggests…

What Customers Really Want

This awesome book is what started it all for me…I’ve been on a reading rampage lately! 2010 has been affectionately dubbed the “make it or break it” year for me and my small business. I’m a fashion designer for little girls…this may sound like a very glamorous title, but in fact, it’s just that, a “title”. I own a small business and in doing that I do it ALL. Anything and EVERYTHING that needs to happen, happens only because of one person, ME. I love the many benefits of being the captain of my own ship but it does get very tiring at times. I want this year to EXPLODE for Goosie Girl Boutique and Les Tissus Bows. I want 2010 to be the BANNER year. I want to be discovered, I want to find my niche in the market, I want it to be the BEST 365 days of my business ever. How do I expect to accomplish such a feat? by EDUCATING myself to the best of my abilities. I hold no college degree, I have no technical business training, and yet, every year my reputation grows and I get more and more orders and in turn provide my clients with a product that they love, need and want. There is ALWAYS room for improvement to ANY organization whether it be a church, a major corporation or a business owned by a “mompreneur” such as myself. My quest to learn as much as I can and to be the best that I can began with this book, What Customers Really Want by Scott McKain. I must have read this book three times cover to cover. I want to soak up every detail!

Some of the things I gleaned, and what you will learn when you read this book:

  • How to deliver a superior client experience that transends mere transactions
  • How to develop brand loyalty
  • How to be DIFFERENT and stand out among the vast sea of competitors
  • How to give personal attention and focus to each client
  • How to give customers a compelling experience which gives a reason to become repeat buyers.
  • How to innovate what you are doing, and become more efficient
  • How to build your organization from the inside out and close the gap between what you offer and what your clients CRAVE

I just created a poll using Poll Daddy!! Loooove poll daddy, it took like a milisecond and it’s up already on my facebook fan page and my blog! Woohoo!!

So here is my poll, please vote!! I’m hoping to be able to bring some personalized products to to the market this year from my studio (based on client requests) so please vote!! (consider it a little market research! :) Thank you!! xoxo, Goose

We have been sooo busy with Halloween this year it’s nearly a miracle we have a Holiday line coming soon! We’ve been finishing the very last of our orders for Halloween, we got BURIED this year, but we are SOOOOO not complaining! We’re feeling mightily blessed that is for sure! We’ve got several common themes running through our costumes and tutus for our Holiday ‘09 Collection…everything from sweet little Santa inspired costumes, angels, snowflakes and more! Another pretty cool thing is that we went the extra mile and created some matching/coordinating sister costumes…I like to have my kids match and I get sooo many requests for matching sister sets…I love creating these but we have two size ranges for our costumes, up to 3T and 4t-8 and many times sisters fall in each of the ranges, so we created themes where sisters can still match even if they don’t have identical costumes! He he…me so tricky! :)

So here are the first six costumes in our Holiday Line, we’d love to hear your input. If you’d like to pre-order or have questions, email us anytime: goosiegirlboutique AT gmail DOT com. They should all be listed in our Etsy shop and on the website in the next week or so!
